Advent Lessons & Carols

The Advent Lessons and Carols Service

Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” This four-week preparation for Christmas is an anticipation of the feast of Jesus’ birth and a reminder that Christ will come again ingreat power and glory to judge both the living and the dead.

Lessons and Carols was developed by Dean Eric Milner-White for King’s College Cambridge, England at the end of the First World War. In 1934, composed Dean Milner-White adapted the service for use in Advent. He wrote:

The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God … seen through the windows and the words of the Bible.
